MANDAN — Three wrestlers from the Dickinson High wrestling team went a perfect 3-0 in the first day of the Mandan Lions Tournament.
Sophomore Austin Hutzenbiler, junior Devin Berger and sophomore Clayton Tangen all have three wins, helping the Midgets to finish in eighth place after the opening round on Friday.
“The kids wrestled pretty well today,” Dickinson co-head coach Cody Wolf said. “For a junior and two sophomores, they are leading the pack for us.”
Hutzenbiler was wrestling at 113 pounds, while Berger, who finished fourth at 120 pounds in the North Dakota Class A state tournament last year, was at 132 pounds and Tangen was at 145 pounds.
Other Dickinson wrestlers coming away with multiple wins was junior Matt Berg at 138 pounds. Michael Dobitz (152), Ashton Schatz (heavyweight), Caden Haugen (106) and Michael Cherwinski (160) each finished with a win.
Senior Jacob Shypkowski went 0-3 on the day and suffered a knee injury, but Wolf expects he should bounce right back.
The Midgets continue action at the Tournament at 9 a.m. today.
“It’s a totally different mindset the wrestlers are getting into,” Wolf said. “They had three rounds today and at least two and the ones that are looking at place could have four rounds.”
