RAPID CITY, S.D. — Dickinson State crashed the boards better than it had all season and pushed South Dakota Mines to overtime Saturday.
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Dickinson State crashed the boards better than it had all season and pushed South Dakota Mines to overtime Saturday.
Too bad turnovers had to ruin the Blue Hawk women’s basketball team’s day.
Despite outrebounding the Hardrockers 54-28, DSU committed 34 turnovers in a 77-69 overtime loss at the King Center.
“It kind of neutralizes each other,” DSU head coach Caleb Harrison said of the team’s rebounding and turnovers.
The Blue Hawks came back after trailing 37-24 at the half, led by a point late in the second half and forced overtime after tying the game at 59.
But, turnovers and game-long foul trouble reared their ugly head in the extra 5-minute session.
“We kind of ran out of steam,” Harrison said. “It took so much energy to get back in the game in the second half. We didn’t have enough in the tanks to finish the overtime.”
Sophomore forward Janae Moore had team highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Hawks (3-5). Senior Yianna Nadeau scored 10 points and had four assists.
“If we get that from her night in and night out, we’re going to have a chance to win every game we play,” Harrison said.
Junior Dawne Degel and senior Jenna Cabello had big games off the bench. Degel had 11 points and five rebounds while Cabello pulled down 11 boards and added seven points.
Alexis Long hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points to lead Mines (6-2). Olivia Antilla added 21 points, five rebounds and five steals. Hillary Hawkins scored 13 points by making all 11 free throws she attempted.
“We showed a lot of grit, a lot of character,” Harrison said. “We’re learning how to compete and now we’re learning how to win these games.”
DSU is back in action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it plays its first-ever Frontier Conference game against Rocky Mountain College at Scott Gymnasium.
