Dickinson tops West Region rival Williston

WILLISTON — The Dickinson High wrestling team took seven of eight matches from the lower to middle weights in a West Region dual against Williston on Thursday.

The seven wins proved to be enough as the Midgets topped Williston 40-33.

“Overall I’m real happy with our lower weights,” Dickinson head coach Pete Dobitz said. “We need to figure out how to be more aggressive in the upper weights.”

Dickinson’s Caden Haugen, Antonio Burkley, Jaret Lee, Austin Hutzenbiler and Devin Berger nabbed five straight wins from 106 to 132 pounds.

“Jaret really wrestled his heart out,” Dobitz said. “He keeps getting after it. We, as coaches, were counting on some pins out of those little guys. Austin and Devin both went out and do what they do.”

Clayton Tangen, a 145-pound sophomore, locked up the dual with a pin of Britton Hausman in 2 minutes, 32 seconds. Michael Dobitz (152) followed up Tangen a win by forfeit.

However, Dickinson couldn’t matchup with Williston’s upper weights. Coyotes senior Paul Michaelson (160) started a six-match run to end the dual. Williston didn’t lose a match from 160 to heavyweight.

Through the first three West Region duals, Dickinson has a perfect record of 3-0. The Midgets look to continue the trend, hosting West Region opponent Turtle Mountain at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“We do have three regional wins and best dual that we wrestled was probably the first one,” Dobitz said. “We came out with fire. That’s something we’re preaching to these boys. The last two duals were kind of just survival.”
