The Grand Forks girls hockey team scored when it most important — during the power play and shorthanded.
The Knightriders used a three-goal first period en route to a 12-0 win over Dickinson on Friday at the Dickinson Recreation Center.
“Dickinson’s goaltender played excellent,” Grand Forks head coach Darin Schumacher said. “She made a lot of good saves and didn’t leave many rebounds. She left that one rebound at the end of the first and that really started the avalanche.”
Through the first 15 minutes, the Midgets kept pace with Grand Forks, allowing just a Tori Christian goal 2:02 into the game.
“We were playing really well and we had a lot of momentum going,” Dickinson sophomore Rachel Lantz said. “The second period was a big letdown and we took our heads out of the game. We just have to keep winning puck battles and that’s what’s going to help us play like we did in the first 15 for 60 minutes.”
Then the Knightriders turned up the heat, scoring a pair of goal in the final two minutes of the first. Lexi O’Halloran supplied the second goal at 1:24 and Ashley Becker closed out the period with a short-handed goal in the final five seconds.
“It seems like kind of a habit we have,” Dickinson head coach Lauren Hansen said. “We open up the game at full speed and get the momentum going.”
The Knightriders held the shots on goal advantage after the first period 28-5. Midgets junior goalie Paige Fahlstrom finished with 25 saves and was replaced by Kelsey Gillen in the second and third periods.
“We only play so many games, so we need to be intense every day,” Schumacher said. “We’re just trying to teach them how to cycle the puck down low and keep up the constant pressure.”
Grand Forks ripped a six-goal second period on the wings of Ashley Becker, Brittany Becker, Christian, Brooke Berry and Nicole Novak.
Gillen allowed six goals on 28 shots and finished the game with 34 saves.
“We got a lot of people on the score sheet, which was nice,” Schumacher said. “Some of them got their first goal ever.”
Jerrica Rosendahl was in goal for the Knightriders and she stopped all nine shots.
Dickinson looks to rebound when it hosts Devils Lake at 2 p.m. today.
“The girls are doing awesome in the first period,” Hansen said. “It’s just transiting into the second and third periods.”
