Midgets rebound against Northstars

A rebound was needed and a rebound is exactly what the Dickinson High boys hockey team received.
After the Midgets suffered their first loss of the season on Friday, the team responded with its fourth win of the season.
Dickinson used Mickey Folske’s three-goal performance to defeat West Region opponent Hazen-Beulah 6-3 on Saturday at the Dickinson Recreation Center.
“This win was huge,” Dickinson junior goalie Brett Schweitzer said. “Getting shutout on Friday against Century got to us, but had that little fire under our butts. It was pretty awesome. Everyone was working well together.”
The line known as “Sweetcorn” made up of Mickey Folske, Matt Pavek and Kass Dvorak, because they wear yellow jerseys during practice, scored four of the team’s six goals. Not only did the “Sweetcorn” line prevail, but the entire team rebounded.
“It feels great,” Folske said with a smile. “I don’t know how to explain it. I got great feeds from my linemates.”
The Midgets (4-1, 3-1 West) surpassed last year’s win total in just the fifth game of the season. The only blemish on Dickinson’s record is the 3-0 loss against Bismarck Century on Friday. Dickinson head coach Tom Folske believes every game has been a step in the right direction.
“Even though last night was a loss, I think they learned a lot about themselves and about their team,” he said. “They used that in a positive way tonight.”
The first step was starting with some intensity. The heightened level proved to work as Dickinson freshman Mike McChesney skated down on a breakaway, but got rejected by the goal post. The freshman’s chances weren’t over as he scored the opening goal at 12 minutes, 55 seconds in the first period on a feed from seniors Jayden Mink and Brendin Steiner.
The “Sweetcorn” line got on the score sheet in the second period.
Mickey Folske scored his first goal of the game and added the team’s final two goals of the contest.
The Midgets held a two-goal lead heading into the third period, which was when Dickinson easily found the back of the net. The Midgets record four goals, including an unassisted goal by sophomore defenseman Collin Bren.
“I just tried to beat my guy to the outside,” Bren said. “I just threw it on net and it hit him in the back and got pretty lucky.”
Pavek, who didn’t play in the team’s win against Bottineau-Rugby due to illness, supplied the team’s fourth goal and aided Mickey Folske three times.
“Most of the third period we played really well,” Tom Folske said. “It was probably some of the best hockey we’ve played all year.”
The North Stats (0-6, 0-5 West) also found some light in the third period, scoring three goals including two in the final five minutes. Connor Candrian, Chase Oliger and Tyler Gustafson each tallied goals.
“Our boys are hard workers,” Hazen-Beulah assistant coach Dylan Zubke said. “They keep improving every game.”
Schweitzer, who came into the game leading the state in goaltending, stopped 16 of 19 shots. He’s allowed three goals in his first two net appearances of the season.
“Brett was solid in the net,” Folske said.
Schweitzer took last year off to compete on the DHS basketball team and Tom Folske said the junior has been playing extremely well.
“Brett played well, he played really well,” Tom Folske said. “He made all the stops he was supposed to. All you ask the goaltender is to make the first save. He did that and sometimes even second and third saves.”
The Midgets continue their season by traveling to Mandan on Thursday. The Braves are currently have a 2-1 record in the West.
“We back on the right track and we’ve got Mandan on Thursday, which is a big one for us,” Bren said. “This game will really motivate us for the next game.”
