SD Mines women use second-half surge to beat Blue Hawks

With finals week beginning Monday, the South Dakota Mines women’s basketball team had more on their minds than Sunday afternoon’s game against Dickinson State.
“That’s their main concern,” Mines head coach Barb Felderman said. “The chemistry. The calculus. Everything else.”
The Hardrockers found a little time for basketball too, breaking open a tight game with a big run midway through the second half to hand the Blue Hawks their fourth consecutive loss, 68-52 at Scott Gymnasium.
“I think our energy dropped and stopped scoring as well, which doesn’t help,” DSU head coach Caleb Harrison said. “We weren’t getting baskets and at the same time, our energy dropped on the defensive end. You’ve got to keep the energy high if you’re not scoring.”
DSU junior guard Mariah Duran hit her second 3-pointer of the second half to cut the Hardrockers’ lead to 44-42 with 13:46 remaining.
That was the last field goal the Blue Hawks (3-8) would get for the next 10 minutes.
In the midst of that, Mines had a 12-4 run in which all of DSU’s points came at the free-throw line.
The Hardrockers (7-3) led by as many as 17, 67-50, in the final minutes.
“I think that, once again, we had a good half instead of having a good, full game,” Duran said. “We had a really good first half and then we just struggled the second half.”
Hillary Hawkins had and Katie Strandholm each had 15 points and five rebounds to lead the Hardrockers.
“Hawkins has been sick. She hasn’t even practiced. It’s good to get her back,” Felderman said. “Katie Strandholm has been hurt. We just got her back too.”
Hawkins hit three 3-pointers in the first half to get her team moving, but Mines only led 38-32 at halftime thanks to a strong effort in the post by DSU sophomores Janae Moore and Jess Bygate.
Moore had 17 points, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals while Bygate chipped in 10 points and six rebounds. Unfortunately for the Blue Hawks, they did much of their work early.
The posts combined for 20 of DSU’s first 23 points, culminating with a Moore 3-pointer from the top of the key with 9:43 left in the first half that tied the game at 23.
Moore and Bygate combined to score just seven more points the rest of the way.
They were 10 of 13 from the free-throw line and were the only Blue Hawks to have luck there. The rest of their team combined to go 5 of 15 from the stripe.
Bygate fouled out with 5 minutes left in the second half. All of her fouls came after halftime, which was indicative of how the Blue Hawks played in the final 20 minutes.
“They really got us going early and did a really good job,” Harrison said. “We just struggled to get them the ball in the second half.”
DSU plays its final games before Christmas when it visits Johnson & Wales University in Denver next Friday and Saturday. Both games start at 1 p.m.
