MILES CITY, Mont. — The Dickinson High boys basketball team showed its potential and also its inexperience.

The Midgets closed out their season opener with 51-47 win over Custer County (Mont.) on Tuesday.

“We started out really well,” Dickinson head coach John Wilson said. “We had a great start to the first quarter. We jumped out to a 20-2 lead to start and then we just had a horrendous second quarter. We showed our inexperience and youth.”

Dickinson held a 26-19 lead at halftime, but in the second half the Cowboys led by one with less than two minutes to play. Levi Jordheim, a junior who finished with nine points, made a contested layup to start the 5-0 Dickinson run to close out the game.

The Midgets (1-0) started the second half by building a 15-point lead. But just like in the second quarter, Dickinson let Custer County back in the game.

“We got sloppy and lost our composure,” Wilson said. “Every game is a learning experience and it’s great when you can walk away with a W.”

Dickinson senior Jaden Kudrna and Jordan Krieg led the team with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Kudrna and Krieg are the team’s only two returning players with a wealth of varsity experience.

“We know that Kudrna and Krieg are going to get us points,” Wilson said.

Kenny Regan led Custer County (0-1) with 14 points. Brock Warren added 13.

The Midgets continue their season by traveling to Turtle Mountain at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

“We have reason to get back to practice and work at getting better for Belcourt,” Wilson said.
