Bowman County heats up, beats Bearcats

At times, Glen Ullin-Hebron looked nothing like a boys basketball team that didn’t win a game last season.
At times, Bowman County didn’t look much like a team that returned four starters from last season’s District 13 runner-up squad.
However, things found a way of working themselves out for the Bulldogs while the Bearcats continued with their rebuilding project Tuesday night during the 42nd annual Roughrider Tournament quarterfinals at Knights of Columbus Activities Center.
Senior Michael Palczewski had 24 points, five rebounds and three steals as Bowman County stretched an nine-point halftime lead into a 74-51 victory.
“We came out really flat,” Palczewski said. “We weren’t playing to our potential that first half, we know that. We were all in a slump. We weren’t hustling like we can. Then we came out at halftime, we picked it up a little bit.”
Glen Ullin-Hebron (1-2) didn’t back down from a fight against the Bulldogs (2-1), The Hoopster magazine’s pick to win District 13.
They cut a 32-17 deficit with 4 minutes left in the second quarter down to 34-25 at halftime after senior Steve Weidmer’s 3-pointer with 56 seconds left.
Weidmer led the Bearcats with 17 points while junior Adam Gietzen added 13 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
That was as close as the Bearcats would get, however.
“I think we got tired, as a team, the second half,” Glen Ullin-Hebron head coach Paul Sayler said. “Our passes were a little bit slow, we weren’t meeting the pass and we were a half-step behind everything. Instead of sticking our leg out and moving, we stuck our arm out. As a team, we just got physically tired.”
Bowman County outscored Glen Ullin-Hebron 15-5 in the first 5:20 of the third quarter, breaking away on strong inside play from senior Brandon Orcutt, who had 11 points and five boards, and Palczewski’s drives to the basket.
The Bulldogs were coming off an unexpected 52-51 loss against Killdeer on Dec. 6 and needed a pick-me-up.
“We did a better job of attacking the lane,” Bowman County head coach Steve Shahan said. “Last week in Killdeer, we settled for perimeter jumpers. We had a lot of baskets driving in or a drive and a kick. That’s going to be a real big help for us.”
Bowman County meets Richardton-Taylor at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals while Glen Ullin-Hebron takes on Mott-Regent in the consolation semifinals.
“I was hoping for a beginning to end sharp performance,” Shahan said. “We’re not quite there yet, but it is early.”
