Richardton-Taylor boys basketball coach Rob Bartz jokingly said he almost went to the bus instead of the locker room after Tuesday night’s win over Mott-Regent.
He wasn’t sure he wanted to be in Knights of Columbus Activities Center in case the officials changed their minds about the outcome of the quarterfinal game of the 42nd annual Roughrider Tournament.
The Raiders won their third consecutive game — as many as they had won each of the past two seasons — beating the Wildfire 74-72 after Mott-Regent junior Tyler Zentner’s jumper from the left elbow as time expired, which would have sent the game to overtime, was waved off by the officials.
Though the call was controversial, it didn’t take anything away from what the Raiders did to win a wild, closely played game that didn’t feature much defense.
“That was a fun game. It was back and forth,” Bartz said with a smile. “I’ve been waiting for a long time to see my kids battle like that and come through in the end and not panic and just play basketball. Finally we’re starting to see that this year and it’d been nice.”
Lane Voltz and Ryder Bohlman both hit five 3-pointers, including one each down the stretch in the fourth quarter, to lead the Raiders with 24 and 17 points, respectively.
Bohlman, who had not played in Richardton-Taylor’s last two games because he was attending the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, came off the bench and hit the game-winning 3-pointer from the left corner with 16 seconds remaining.
Mott-Regent senior Taylor Zentner drove the length of the floor, drove to the hoop and missed. The ball found the hands of his younger brother, who appeared to have sent the game to overtime.
“If it was good or not, I don’t know. I couldn’t tell,” Wildfire head coach Wayne Heckaman said. “That was the least of my concerns, that last-second shot. We just executed poorly and we didn’t get some breaks go our way down the stretch and that was the game.”
The biggest lead in the game came in the first quarter when Mott-Regent (2-2) went up 18-9 on a Tyler Zentner 3-pointer.
The Raiders (3-1) chipped away in the second quarter as Voltz scored 18 first-half points to help his team take a 39-38 halftime lead.
Neither team led by more than three until the Wildfire went up five a couple times in the fourth, the last on a Taylor Zentner 3-pointer with 4:32 remaining that put Mott-Regent up 66-61.
Taylor Zentner had 26 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Tyler Zentner had 15 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Jonah Honeyman added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Cade Kuntz added 12 points, four rebounds and three steals for the Raiders before fouling out late in the fourth quarter. Kasey Dressler had 10 points, 10 rebounds and a big three-point play that tied the game at 69 with 2:28 left in the game.
Chad Gullickson, who had nine points, made an uncontested jumper in the lane to put the Raiders ahead 71-69. Mott-Regent retook the lead at the free-throw line, setting up the crazy final seconds of the game.
“It means a lot,” Dressler said of the win. “A lot of hard work went into it. We’ve got to keep moving forward though and keep building into it.”
The Raiders play Bowman County at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals. Mott-Regent takes on Glen Ullin-Hebron at 4:30 p.m. in the consolation semifinals.
“It’s taken them so long just to learn how to win games,” Bartz said. “We’re still learning. … We’ve got to keep working at that, figure out how to close this stuff out and we’re getting there.”
