What is going on in the Stark County Court system?
I am writing this letter in regards to a story published Friday in The Press. The case involved an intoxicated Dickinson man who shot an individual because he was hitting a vehicle with a baseball bat at his property.
Self-defense does not apply here as if anyone felt threatened they could have ran in the house and called police.
The victim never got shot just once to slow him down, nor twice, nor three times but four times! This clearly shows that this guy had the intent to murder on his mind.
How could this criminal’s case get lowered to a misdemeanor, receive a little bit of probation and be free to walk the streets of Dickinson again?
The shooter’s attorney mentioned in the article that after he shot him he began to cry. Does that really have anything to do with the case? He began to cry because he knew he did something very dumb and was going to jail for a long time but thanks to the court system, he’s a free man.
Not punishing criminals seems to be happening more and more in Stark County than any other county in North Dakota.
If the Stark County Court system is always going to let these criminals walk, they should at least create some type of system similar to the sexual offender registry. This way it will give the public a heads up as to where these people are living and the seriousness of the crime they have committed.
Our court system has failed us yet again.
