Trinity girls open season win defensive statement

MINOT — In the first game of its season, the Dickinson Trinity girls basketball team made a strong defensive statement.

The Titans had 28 steals and caused 36 turnovers en route to a 47-25 win over Bottineau on Friday at the Shootout on the Prairie.

“We were real happy with the effort put forth tonight, the intensity level especially,” Trinity head coach Alysia Barman said. “We did some things well defensively, but there are some areas we need to improve on.”

Trinity juniors Katelyn Grinsteinner and Jillian Stockert each supplied nine points, while Rachel Jahner added eight. Stockert added five rebounds and five steals.

“Rachel did a great job of leading us,” Barman said. “Rachel and Katelyn have the potential to be some of the best shooters in the state. They’re given the green light.”

Stephanie Brenden and Katryna Hahn each supplied six points for the Stars (0-1). Brenden had Bottineau’s two 3-pointers in the game.

The Titans led 26-10 at halftime and didn’t give up much wiggle room, extending their lead to 19 points to start the fourth quarter.

Trinity continues its season playing Des Lacs-Burlington today in Minot. Barman hopes the team can learn from some slight mistakes.

“Where we broke down in this game were mental mistakes, communication errors, but they are things we can handle,” Barman said. “Those are things we have to become better at and we have to do it every single possession and every single play.”
