2 Midgets finish runner-up at Classic

The Dickinson High wrestling team learned the mental toughness aspect of wrestling three consecutive days.

The Midgets had 12 placers including two runner-ups and finished in a tie for sixth place with 141.5 points on Saturday at the Dickinson Classic at the DHS gymnasium.

“It wasn’t anything above and beyond, but it also wasn’t terrible,” Dickinson co-head coach Pete Dobitz said. “We wrestled alright.”

Austin Hutzenbiler, a 113-pound sophomore, and junior 126-pounder Devin Berger both placed runner-up.

Marlo Bell, a Fargo South junior ranked No. 1 at 113, defeated Hutzenbiler in a 4-2 decision. The Dickinson sophomore felt he had a chance in the third period, but he said there’s a reason why Bell is ranked first in the state.

“I felt like if I pushed the pace in the third I could have won,” Hutzenbiler said. “I nearly got the takedown, but he’s a pretty quick and solid wrestler.”

Berger finished fourth at the Class A state tournament last year and has high hopes for this season. Unfortunately, he ran into Mandan’s Curt Zachmeier, who is ranked No. 2 in the state at 126. Zachmeier beat Berger by a 14-3 major decision. Berger was pleased with his two-day performance, but he said first place would have made the day brighter.

“Zachmeier is a really good kid and I’ve seen him work in the offseason,” Berger said. “We’ve wrestled in the past and it’s been close each match. He’s a pretty good kid and I knew I had a challenge.”

Turtle Mountain won the tournament with 199.5 points. Mandan finished in second with 171 points, while Minot took third with 165.

Turtle Mountain didn’t fair too well in DHS gymnasium on Thursday, suffering a 36-31 West Region dual loss to Dickinson. However, Dobitz said the magic of the dual win for his boys might have already subsided.

“I think maybe the Turtle Mountain effect wore off by the time Saturday came around, because we didn’t have a lot of fire early on,” Dobitz said. “It’s just like the first round of a tournament. You have to be ready to go and if not you’re in consolation instead going for third or fourth.”

Jaret Lee (113) wrestled unattached for Dickinson, but the freshman finished in third taking a 7-6 decision over Bismarck’s Alex Hoffman. Clayton Tangen (145) ended in fourth place against Dillon Beeler.

The Midgets also had junior Jace Dukart (182) in fifth as he defeated Bismarck’s Willie Sam in a 7-4 decision.

Caden Haugen (106), Michael Dobitz (152), Jacob Brooke (170) and Ashton Schatz (heavyweight) all finished in sixth. Dillon Clark (145) took eighth, while Dickinson junior Michael Cherwinski and senior Jacob Shypkowski battled for seventh at 160. Cherwinski won by a 4-2 decision.

Dickinson continues its season, hosting its final two duals of the season against Bismarck High at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Mandan at 6 p.m. Thursday.

“We talked about physical and mental toughness on Friday and the physical part is going to play a factor again,” Pete Dobitz said. “We get a few days off before Tuesday and then a day off in between for Thursday. We’re going to be able to use this as a learning experience on how and what to expect when you are in two or three days of wrestling, because that what happens when you get to the state tournament.”
