Allegations against Stark County Sheriff Clarence Tuhy were put to rest after a hearing in July and Gov. Jack Dalrymple on Aug. 9 dismissed a request to oust the sheriff from his elected position.

Over the course of two days, 20 witnesses — including past and present employees — testified in a hearing before William Hodny, a retired state district judge.

Hodny submitted his conclusion to the governor that there was not enough evidence to support Tuhy’s dismissal.

“I am very pleased with the report,” Tuhy said after the ruling. “From the outset, I did not feel my conduct, as alleged, fell within the parameters of the removal statute. I will continue to work hard for the people of Stark County.”

Among issues Tuhy addressed during the hearings were the purchase of vehicles and rifles; incidents involving dispatch; the compensation of deputies; background checks for potential employees, including deputies; the training of deputies; the use of Stark County Sheriff’s Office resources for personal reasons; the alleged theft from the House of Manna; the loss of staff and the allegations of a hostile work environment, including any lewd or inappropriate comments made by the sheriff.

When questioned in February about an accusation of creating a “toxic environment” at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office, Tuhy rebutted and said the environment at SCSO is “healthy” and he has happy employees.

Tuhy previously told The Dickinson Press regarding his alleged involvement in a theft from the House of Manna in Dickinson, a nonprofit that accepts donations and distributes to those in need, “it was an honest mistake.”
