Shorthanded Dickinson wins BHS-CHS Invite

BISMARCK — The shorthanded Dickinson High gymnastics team didn’t have its best night of the season, but it walked out of the Bismarck High-Bismarck Century Invitational the victor nonetheless.

BISMARCK — The shorthanded Dickinson High gymnastics team didn’t have its best night of the season, but it walked out of the Bismarck High-Bismarck Century Invitational the victor nonetheless.

Bismarck’s Kaylee Keller swept the events en route to a winning 38.000 all-around score, but the Midgets’ team effort helped hold off the Demons. Dickinson, missing its best gymnast in two events and one of their two seniors entirely, had a team score of 142.375 while Bismarck finished with 141.400.

“It actually is a good feeling to come out ahead on that, considering the short-handedness,” Dickinson coach Kent Van Ells said.

Senior Mckenzie Kostelecky led Dickinson with a 35.400 all-around score, finishing fourth. Junior Mikaela Kessel (35.000, sixth), freshman Keana Kudrna (34.325, eighth) and sophomore Jill Mueller (34.275, ninth) all finished in the top 10.

Kessel was second on floor exercise (9.525) and tied for second on the balance beam (9.150) while taking seventh on the vault (8.95).

Kudrna was third on vault and tied Kostelecky for fourth on the uneven bars. Kostelecky also took fifth in both the floor exercise and the vault.

Dickinson freshman Acacia Fossum competed on the uneven bars, placing third at 8.975, and the balance beam, where she was fourth at 9.075. The two-time state all-around champion is nursing a pulled quad muscle.
