WINNIPEG, Manitoba — It took the Dickinson State men’s basketball almost an entire game to shake off its Christmas break rust.
Trailing by seven points with a minute and a half remaining, the Blue Hawks hit a pair of 3-pointers and got a three-point play in the post to rally for a 75-72 victory over Brandon (Manitoba) University in the opening round of the 46th annual Wesmen Classic on Friday afternoon.
“We played like we’d had some days off, kind of rusty,” DSU men’s basketball coach Ty Orton said.
In the final 90 seconds, Jared Hansen and Robbie Morey hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Johnie Sanders converted a three-point play off a John Hanstad steal to put the Blue Hawks ahead for good.
“At the end of the game, they really played well,” Orton said. “They really bucked down on the defensive end is what got us shots on the offensive end.”
Hansen led the Blue Hawks with 18 points, Hanstad had 16 points and six rebounds and Sanders notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Ty Ackelson added 13 points.
Jordan Reaves led four Brandon players who scored in double figures with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
DSU plays Lakehead University of Thunder Bay, Ontario at 7:30 p.m. today in the semifinals. Orton said the tournament is challenging, no matter who the Blue Hawks (6-7) end up facing.
“There’s some really good teams here,” We played the biggest team (Brandon) we’re going to play all year.”
