Midgets fall for first time this season

JAMESTOWN — Bismarck High edged Dickinson on the team side and Bismarck Century’s Jessica Gabriel clipped the Midgets’ Mikaela Kessel for all-around victory Friday night at the KC Invite.

JAMESTOWN — Bismarck High edged Dickinson on the team side and Bismarck Century’s Jessica Gabriel clipped the Midgets’ Mikaela Kessel for all-around victory Friday night at the KC Invite.

Bismarck had a team 139.750 team score compared to Dickinson’s 139.375. Gabriel’s 36.550 all-around score topped Kessel’s 35.900.

Dickinson’s Keana Kudrna won the vault with a 9.325 and Kessel took the floor exercise with a 9.525, beating Gabriel by a point.

Dickinson and Bismarck were neck-and-neck in every event except balance beam, which the Demons dominated as the Midgets uncharacteristically faltered.

“We did have some good performances out there,” Dickinson coach Kent Van Ells said. “We came down to balance beam. I don’t know if you would say we bombed it, but if you don’t say we bombed it, it was pretty close.”

It was Dickinson’s fourth meet of the season and first it didn’t win. The Midgets were without two-time all-around state champion Acacia Fossum. The freshman is recovering from a lingering muscle pull.

The Midgets look to bounce back when they compete in the Fargo Davies Invitational at 10 a.m. today.
