He was raised and educated in Golva attending Golva High School. John joined the Civilian Conservation Corp in the mid 1930’s and later moved to Minnesota where he worked for several different farmers. On one particular farm where he worked, he met Thelma Lydeen who, also was working there. They were later married on March 29, 1941, in Morrison County, Minn., in the minister’s home. Following their marriage John and Thelma moved to the Doyle Place south of Sentinel Butte, where they farmed for many years. In 1961, they moved to the Peterson Place north of Beach where they continued to farm until their retirement in 1978. After their retirement, John and Thelma moved to Beach and in 2009 they moved to the Golden Valley Manor in Beach where they resided until John’s passing.
John accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord in 1956 and remained strong in his Christian faith throughout his life. He became a member of the United Methodist Church and was also a board member of the church. John was a loving husband and a wonderful father and grandfather. He enjoyed reading books, especially Louis L’amour westerns. He was self-taught in many areas of his life. John had a great sense of humor.
