The Dickinson Trinity girls basketball team has had a tendency to get off to slow starts this season.
On Thursday night, the Titans start was nothing short of terrible. Their finish was another story.
Trinity rallied after a bad first quarter and buckled down defensively as it went on to blast Standing Rock 71-44 in a non-region game at Knights of Columbus Activities Center.
“You know I’ve thought, at different times throughout the year, we just lay down when we get down like that,” Trinity head coach Alysia Barman said. “We’ve got a group out on the floor that fought back, showed a lot of pride defensively and really stepped up for us.”
Junior point guard Rachel Jahner led the way for Trinity, finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds, six steals and five assists to go along with just one turnover.
“We didn’t start out shooting that good, but we didn’t let that get us down and we kept playing aggressive,” Jahner said.
Less than four minutes into the game, things weren’t looking good for the Titans (4-4). They trailed 14-0 and missed their first 14 shots from the field, plus a pair of free throws.
Finally, junior Jillian Stockert got a shot to go down in the post with 2:13 remaining in the quarter.
That opened the floodgates.
The Titans cut the Warriors’ lead to 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and blew things open in the second quarter as they went on an 18-3 run in the final 5:15 to take a 32-20 halftime lead.
Trinity stretched that even further by ending the third quarter on a 19-0 run that put them up 60-32. Its biggest lead was 69-35.
Though the Titans committed 25 turnovers, including several in the first quarter, the Warriors (1-7) fared worse. They turned the ball over 33 times and shot just 17 of 52 (33 percent) from the field.
Jahner and Kennedy Keator got the Titans going in the first and second quarters. Jahner hit a momentum-swinging 3-pointer with just under 2 minutes left in the first and Keator came off the bench to score six points in 2:25.
“She can do so many things for us,” Barman said. “She really does bring a lot. She can cause a lot of problems defensively. She’s starting to understand the program a little more and we’re starting to see some nice things from her.”
Keator had 13 points and Katelyn Grinsteinner added 11 points, four assists, three steals and three rebounds.
Jaylee Four Swords led Standing Rock with 20 points and seven rebounds while Ariana Gates had 10 points and five rebounds.
The Titans shot just 27 of 83 (33 percent) from the field but got a lot of second chances. They held a 70-36 edge on the boards, including 42 offensive rebounds.
“The one thing that I was most pleased with tonight was just how hard we rebounded, offensively and defensively,” Barman said. “As a team, we did a great job of that. That’s what we need to do if we want to be successful.”
Trinity is scheduled to play Kidder County at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Bismarck Civic Center Jamboree in the Exhibition Hall, weather permitting.
Standing Rock head coach Jesse McLaughlin was not available for comment. The team had an extended meeting in the locker room immediately after the game.
