Blue Hawks finish 5th at NAIA National Duals

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Dickinson State wrestling team won both of its duals Sunday to finish in fifth place at the NAIA Cliff Keen National Duals tournament.

After senior Jose Lopez’s third-period pin of Midland (Neb.) heavyweight Lonnie Brown gave the No. 9-ranked Blue Hawks a 21-18 consolation semifinal victory, DSU rolled over No. 8 Lindsey Wilson 29-13 in the fifth-place dual.

Trailing 18-15 going into the heavyweight match, Lopez stuck Brown in 6:02 to swing the dual in DSU’s favor.

The Blue Hawks trailed 13-6 before turning the momentum in its favor in the upper weights.

Seniors Cameron Schrempp (174) and Jesse Hellinger (184) each went 3-2 at the tournament but closed out strong Sunday. Hellinger got a pair of pins and Schrempp pinned Lindsey Wilson’s James Haywood with 2 seconds left in their match.

Hellinger’s second-period pin of Midland’s Jahsua Marsh put DSU ahead 15-13, only to have Midland’s Kolton Kersten put his team ahead with a 20-4 technical fall win over Skyler Carroll.

DSU 125-pound junior Bryden Lazaro went 4-1 at the tournament, picking up an 11-1 major decision over Lindsey Wilson’s Felix Casa de Valle to close out the tournament.

Nestor Ruleas went 3-0 at 149 pounds with a pin, a major decision and a decision after being inserted in the consolation rounds.

The Blue Hawks return to the mat at 5 p.m. Friday for duals against the University of Regina (Saskatchewan) and No. 3-ranked University of Great Falls (Mont.). They host the Tyler Plummer Classic tournament beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.
