Nick’s Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Rev. Kregg Hochhalter as the celebrant. Interment will take place in the Spring at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Dickinson Honors Team following the Mass.
Visitation is Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, with a rosary and vigil service at 3 p.m., with Deacon Bob Stockert presiding.
Nick M. Steckler was born Feb. 28, 1930, in Burt, the son of Jacob and Rosemary (Barth) Steckler. He was raised and educated in the area, and graduated from New England High School. He then went on to attend Capital Commercial College in Bismarck.
Nick joined the U.S. Army on Aug. 11, 1950, and served honorably until his discharge on Nov. 15, 1957. He had served in Korea and also Europe.
Nick returned to North Dakota and was united in marriage to Agnes Linderman on Aug. 30, 1954.
He drove mail truck for 18 years, and then began a 19-year career at Dickinson State College where he worked as a custodian. Nick enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, was a faithful fan of the Blue Hawk football, and enjoyed local baseball in the Summer. He had belonged to the DAV and the American Legion.
Nick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Agnes; their five children, John Steckler, Rockville, Ind., Cathy (Bruce) Custer, Billings, Mont., Bernard (Sandra) Steckler, Dickinson, Beverly (Duane) Weiler, Dickinson, and Steven (Lynet) Steckler, Billings, Mont.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, William Steckler, Tacoma, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Veronica; and brothers, Alex, John, Michael, James and George.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the DAV or to the local American post.
