Dickinson takes 2nd at Gym-O-Rama meet

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Dickinson High head gymnastics coach Kent Van Ells had concerns about filling a complete squad Saturday.

Despite the Midgets’ No. 1 gymnast limited to only one event and Mikaela Kessel and Jill Mueller sitting out, Dickinson claimed runner-up at the Rapid City Gym-O-Rama.

“We were really shorthanded,” Van Ells said. “I was concerned about having a complete squad almost. I’m really proud of the girls with the number of injuries we’ve had this season.”

The Midgets finished with a team score of 141.475, while Rapid City Central, the defending South Dakota state champions, posted a 148.600 to win the meet.

Dickinson freshman and back-to-back North Dakota all-around champion Acacia Fossum was limited to one event, the balance beam, because of a pull leg muscle. She made the most of competing in her one routine since the Christmas break taking first in the beam with a 9.750.

Dickinson, however, received solid performances from seniors Mckenzie Kostelecky and Chantal Urlacher and freshman Keana Kudrna. The three finished the top six of the all-around as Kostelecky led the way in fourth place with a 35.500, while Kudrna and Urlacher finished fifth (35.100) and sixth (34.925), respectively. Kudrna also won the vault scoring a 9.650.

Dickinson hopes to start recovering from some injuries before hosting a meet at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
