Schroeder, DHS girls defeat Custer County

MILES CITY, Mont. — Senior Rachel Schroeder had 15 points as the Dickinson High girls basketball team left Montana on Monday night with its fourth victory of the season and second straight.

Junior Sydney Gangl hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 10 points and four assists as the Midgets held on to defeat Custer County, Mont., 40-33.

It was not a fast-paced game, Dickinson head coach Dan Pender said.

“(Custer County) was deliberate on offense,” Pender said. “When we got a lead, we were deliberate there.”

The Midgets (4-6) shot 49 percent from the field, going 17 of 35. But, they were hindered down the stretch by their free-throw shooting.

Finishing just 4 of 15 from the line, Dickinson missed six straight in the fourth quarter — Montana plays four eight-minute quarters, unlike North Dakota’s Class A which plays two 18-minute halves — during a stretch that would have completely sealed the win, Pender said.

Senior Taylor Cooper added four points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals for Dickinson. Senior Ali Moody had five points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Midgets visit No. 1-ranked Bismarck Century on Thursday and host Bismarck St. Mary’s on Friday. The last time Dickinson played Century, it forced overtime before falling 66-57.

“We’ve got to get one of them,” Pender said. “Going to Century, you’ve got to be ready for them because they’re going to come after it. It’ll be interesting.”
