Edna Binek

A funeral Mass for Edna Binek, 84, Dickinson, is 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with Rev. Shannon Lucht celebrating. Burial will take place at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Visitation is 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Edna passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson.

Edna Pflepsen was born Jan. 10, 1929, to Peter and Natalie (Marthe) Pflepsen in Richardton. She grew up on the family farm near Richardton and attended grade school in Taylor and Richardton.

Edna attended high school in Yankton, S.D., graduating from Mount Marty High School. She returned to Dickinson and began working as a cook at Binek’s Rec Center.

It was here that she met Theodore Binek. They were married on Oct. 26, 1948. The couple made their home east of Dickinson where they raised their children and operated Binek’s Coal Mine.

Later, Edna worked at the KC and American Legion clubs in Dickinson. Her most rewarding job came as a school bus driver. Edna thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of the job and the responsibility for getting the children safely to and from school. She retired from driving bus in 2001.

Edna enjoyed reading, fishing, playing cards and taking care of her dog, Missy.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the ARC. She was among the group of mothers and other individuals in the community who worked to establish the ARC chapter in Dickinson in the early 1960s.

Edna met the challenges of her life with good spirit, humor and perseverance.

Edna is survived by: a son, Tim Binek, Dickinson; daughters, Eileen (Sylvester Fernandez) Binek, St. Paul, Minn., and Clarine Binek, Dickinson; a brother Raymond Pflepsen, Richardton; a sister, Gladys Fandel, St. Cloud, Minn.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; sons: Lawrence, Gerald and Kevin; a daughter, Ann Margaret; and five brothers and sisters.
