The only structure being built on the Pheasant Country Golf Course in South Heart is a cart storage shed, officials confirmed Wednesday.

Rumors that the golf course will be sold and turned into housing began floating around the city of 314 after the Golf Course Building Authority went to the City Council wondering what it owned as a golf course, President Jerry Perdaems Jr. said.

“A couple of weeks ago or so a couple of us attended a city meeting and just wanted some clarification on exactly what we owned as a golf building authority board that’s running the golf course and the city,” he said. “And I don’t know, somehow, from that, rumors got started, but certainly not. Everything is going to remain as is.”

South Heart resident Glenn Wagner heard a different version of the rumor, that the golf course might be sold, but would remain a golf course.

“I don’t plan on doing anything,” said Mayor Floyd Hurt. “It’s running good, making money, we’re not going to sell it.”

The housing rumor could have started because developers are building near the course, he said.

Pheasant Country Golf Course generated about $400,000 in 2012, but cost $393,000 to run, Perdaems said. Every cent made by the golf course goes back into operating it.

The golf course and its bar and restaurant, the Tee Box, have been a draw for the small Stark County city since it was built almost two decades ago, Perdaems said.

“We’ve got a good management team,” Hurt said. “We don’t need anybody else to come in there.”

The course was built and started with a volunteer effort from the community in the early 1990s, but has since become successful enough to hire people, he said.

A couple of improvements to the course will be ready in the spring, Perdaems said. The cart storage broke ground in the fall, and there will be an alternative tee box on the 13th hole that will be ready when the grass grows in.

“Come on and golf,” Hurt said. “We’ve got a good golf course.”
