Fossum wins all-around as Midgets edge Minot

MINOT — The Dickinson gymnastics team has never had much luck beating Minot in its home gym.

The Midgets made their own luck Friday during the Kim Lupo Meet, edging the Majettes by less than a point.

Acacia Fossum won the all-around, balance beam and floor exercise to help Dickinson earn 147.925 points. Minot finished with 147 for second place.

Fossum had a season-high 38.350 score in the all-around, scored a 9.75 on floor and a 9.725 on balance beam. She took third on vault (9.475) and uneven bars (9.400).

“Acacia outdid herself,” Dickinson head coach Kent Van Ells said.

Keana Kudrna tacked on a victory on the vault, scoring a 9.550, and Mikaela Kessel returned to the all-around after suffering a concussion in early January. She took fifth with a 36.525.

Despite a rough day on the beam as a team, Van Ells said it was good to beat Minot as the Midgets begin preparing for the West Region meet, which they host Friday, Feb. 15.

“Minot was really close to us,” Van Ells said. “We had a really good meet and they were still about a point behind us, which is significant, but not overpowering. They’re going to be tough to beat if they hit.”
