Great Falls men edge DSU late

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Malek Singleton hit three free throws in the final minute that gave the University of Great Falls the lead it needed to edge Dickinson State in a Frontier Conference men’s basketball game.

Despite John Hanstad’s four 3-pointers and game-high 16 points, the Blue Hawks watched a lead crumble away late and couldn’t hit the shots down the stretch as the Argos took a 54-52 victory on Thursday night.

Naren Maynard scored just six points for Great Falls. But four of them came at big moments. Maynard hit a pair of shots during a seven-point run late in the second half that brought the Argos back and eventually put them in control.

The Argos (16-10, 7-5 Frontier) played without leading scorer Marcel Towns.

Johnie Sanders added 11 points for the Blue Hawks (10-15, 3-7 Frontier). Phillip Johnson Jr. had six points and eight rebounds.

James Holmes scored 12 and T.J. Harris had 10 for the Argos.

Both teams struggled from the field. Great Falls was 18 of 49 (37 percent) and DSU was 20 of 55 (26 percent).
