MINOT — There’s a chance the Dickinson and Minot High boys hockey teams will play each other in the opening round of next week’s West Region Tournament.
If Friday’s regular-season game was any precursor, it’s would make for a fun postseason matchup.
Matt Flom’s power-play goal in the second period proved to be the difference as the Magicians edged Dickinson 2-1.
“We didn’t come out with fire like we should have in the first period,” Dickinson head coach Tom Folske said. “But the boys hung in there, played hard and made a game of ‘er.”
Andrew Heckaman brought the Midgets within a goal with 5½ minutes remaining in the third period on an assist from Kass Dvorak. But they couldn’t punch another one in.
Jamison Gray had 23 saves, including 11 in the first period for the Midgets (7-13-0, 4-10-0-1 West)
Minot goal Breydan Effertz turned away 17 shots in the game, including eight in the third period as Dickinson tried to make a comeback.
“The whole third period, we played pretty well,” Folske said. “We just couldn’t put one home.”
Minot (14-7-1, 11-3-0-0 West) was playing with a supposed junior varsity team, though five of the team’s top scorers were on the ice.
The Midgets play Williston at 2:15 p.m. MST today. They are locked into the No. 7 spot in the West Region Tournament.
Minot’s regular season is over. It can finish with the Nos. 1, 2 or 3 seed depending on the results of today’s game between Bismarck High and Bottineau-Rugby, which is worth six points.
“That could swing everybody up or down a spot,” Folske said.
