Hettinger-Scranton sends 4 to state, wins Region 4

BOWMAN — Hettinger-Scranton had four wrestlers win individual championships as it rolled to the Region 4 team title on Saturday at the region tournament at Solberg Gymnasium.

Codi Tomac (126 pounds), Christian Hughes (145), Rodney Vanhoff (152) and Brandon Ehlers (285) all won titles for the Night Hawks, who compiled 218 team points to defeat runner-up Bowman County by 45.

Hughes pinned Bowman County’s Troy Steele in 2 minutes, 51 seconds and Ehlers pinned the Bulldogs’ Macormick Stuber in 2:37. Vanhoff scored an 18-1 technical fall against Beulah-Hazen’s Sonny Herczeg.

Tomac picked up a 9-4 decision over New Salem-Almont’s Cullen Seeger.

Hettinger-Scranton is sending 12 wrestlers to the Class B state tournament.

Bowman County had three champions. Talan Nielson scored a 5-4 decision over Watford City’s Logan Gumke at 113, Michael Longland pinned Killdeer’s Daniel Arthur in 24 seconds at 170 and 220-pound Jacob Hildebrant pinned Hettinger-Scranton’s Kevin Sandgren in 1:44.

Killdeer’s lone champion was Tanner Rohde at 132. He earned a 16-9 decision against NS-A’s Matt Newman.

Bowman County is sending nine wrestlers to state while Killdeer, which placed fifth as a team, has eight going. The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualified for state.
