Hutzenbiler, Lee win West Region titles for Midgets

MINOT — Austin Hutzenbiler and Jaret Lee have been practicing against each other in the Dickinson High wrestling room all season.

It has helped them more than they ever imagined.

Hutzenbiler and Lee had their biggest days of the season Saturday as both won West Region Tournament individual championships.

“We always talk about, to become a state champion and do well, you have to have good wrestling partners,” Dickinson co-head coach Pete Dobitz said.

Hutzenbiler and Lee both scored title victories on two-point decisions over Bismarck High opponents.

Lee claimed a 4-2 decision against Taylor Nein at 106 pounds. Hutzenbiler defeated Kael Knowlen 6-4 at 113 pounds.

Hutzenbiler has defeated several top-ranked wrestlers from North and South Dakota in the past month and Dobitz believes he will now take the No. 1 seed into next weekend’s Class A state tournament.

“Confidence is a pretty dang good thing in the sport of wrestling and right now his confidence is pretty dog gone good,” Dobitz said.

Dickinson had one fourth-place finisher, two take fifth place and four in sixth place.

Devin Berger lost by a forfeit to Turtle Mountain’s Tanner Bickford in the 126-pound third-place match. Berger, who had missed seven days of school due to illness in the past two weeks, pinned Bickford in the opening round but had met his tournament limit of five matches, forcing him to forfeit.

Clayton Tangen pinned teammate Dillon Clark in 48 seconds of the 145-pound fifth-place match while Jace Dukart won at 182 by a forfeit.

Caden Haugen (106), Collin Thielen (138) and Michael Cherwinski (152) all finished sixth.

Three wrestlers took seventh place: Jacob Shypkowski pinned Logan Usher in 4:02 at 152, Michael Dobitz won by a forfeit at 160 and Dual Keck picked up a 5-0 overtime decision over Jamestown’s Mark Reynolds at heavyweight.
