A dryer that malfunctioned at the West River Community Center last month, causing the facility to fill with smoke and close for a day, has been replaced.
WRCC Facility Operations Manager Xavier Dukart told the Dickinson Park Board commissioners during its regular meeting Monday that the new machine is installed.
“We got a new one in and it’s up and running,” Dukart said. “It’s a bigger capacity dryer and should use a little less energy.”
The old machine dried its last garment Jan. 17 before causing the disruption that evacuated and closed the WRCC, which reopened the following day. No one was injured as a result of the malfunction.
Also at the meeting, Parks and Rec Director James Kramer said the company behind The Highlands housing development, which is planned to go up in southeast Dickinson along Ninth Avenue by the Heart River, is interested in the possibility of connecting Jaycees Park with a possible new city park next to the development, a topic that was brought up at a recent meeting.
“They really like the idea of somehow tying the two parks together with Jaycees Park just across the river,” Kramer said. “They would like to help us pursue a walking bridge that would potentially tie the two pieces of property together.”
Kramer said one potential option would be to eventually place a new park on a 128,000-square-foot plot of land currently zoned as commercial property to the immediate west of the Ninth Avenue bridge.
Kramer said The Highlands developers have not yet offered to help finance a potential walking bridge, but that they are interested in pursuing the idea further.
Several board members expressed interest in the different possibilities that could link Jaycees Park and a new city park. Kramer said more information would be gathered and brought back to the board during a future meeting. The city has shown interest in placing a new park on the southeast end of Dickinson.
