Governor sees no need for new mansion

BISMARCK — North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple sees no need for a new governor’s mansion, but some lawmakers want to build one.

The North Dakota House defeated a measure Wednesday that would have authorized the construction of a new governor’s residence on the state Capitol grounds, along with a so-called executive conference center. The measure authorized $3 million for the new dwelling and allowed another $3 million from “private donations or other sources.”

Dalrymple said the current residence is “perfectly adequate.” The home was completed in 1960 and is an example of prairie style architecture.

A major renovation was completed in 2000.

Lawmakers also defeated a measure in 2011 for a new governor’s home.
