BISMARCK — The Dickinson High boys basketball team was within striking distance at halftime.
But during the second half, there was about a 6-minute stretch where No. 3-ranked Bismarck St. Mary’s capitalized on every Midget mistake.
The Saints outscored Dickinson 42-28 in the second half en route to a 76-57 West Region win on Thursday. It allowed St. Mary’s to finish with a perfect 10-0 record at home this season.
“We matched their intensity right away and we battled,” Dickinson head coach John Wilson said. “We came out in the second half, got fouled right away, missed both free throws and had six to seven minutes where we just went in the tank.”
Wilson said during the six-minute span in the second half, the Midgets had 10 turnovers which led to easy buckets for the Saints (14-2, 12-2 West.)
“They are so athletic and quick, it turned into easy layups for them,” Wilson said. “That’s just the mental end of it.”
Jordan Krieg scored a season-high 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Levi Jordheim added a career-high 10 points to lead the Midgets (8-9, 5-9 West).
Ben Weisbeck supplied a team-high 22 points, while Scott Nagel added 12 points and 12 rebounds. Darius Sparks chipped in 13 points and Trent Bohan had 10.
The Midgets host West Region opponent Mandan at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for the home finale.
“We battled Mandan well down there,” Wilson said. “They are a team that’s got tremendously better as the year has gone on. They are one of those teams in my opinion that’s going to be battle for a top four spot to get into the state tournament.
“It’s going to be senior night, we have to come out and defend our home floor.”
