Medora's 'Family Fun Center' a go for 2nd year

After a popular first year, the child-friendly downtown Medora “Family Fun Center” received the green light for a second year of operation from the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission last month.

Approval of a new water balloon-themed addition to the attraction — which includes an inflatable slide, bungee trampoline and rock climbing wall south of the city pool — called “water wars” was put on hold for now.

“For the most part, there was just a concern about the colors of the backdrop on the new addition,” said Mike Beaudoin of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation, which facilitates the center. “We’re basically just looking for another color that would blend in better with the scenery in that area of town. The proposal had some red, white and blue colors on its backdrop.”

Medora Mayor Doug Ellison said close to 5,000 people attended the family center in 2012. Commission members expressed concern during its February meeting that the colors accompanying the water balloon addition be consistent with Medora’s overall “Western” theme.

“Things went well last year,” Ellison said. “I didn’t hear anything negative at all about the Family Fun Center. I think the center is a great addition to Medora.”

Additions to the family fun center that were approved by the commission were construction of a new restroom structure with covered seating rinse-off stations and installation of up to four shade umbrellas. Water wars is expected to come before the commission again this month before ultimately moving on to the City Council for discussion.
