DSU beats Bemidji State, falls to St. Cloud in openers

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Dickinson State softball team’s season started Saturday with a split.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Dickinson State softball team’s season started Saturday with a split.

Monique Yslas batted in five runs and Alex Vargas had three RBIs on a home run and a double as the Blue Hawks beat Bemidji State 11-2.

St. Cloud State’s Breana Canova hit a two-run homer in the fifth to lead the Huskies past DSU 4-2 in its second game of the Kelly Laas Memorial Invitational at the Husky Dome.

Taysia Kaufman picked up the win against Bemidji State, striking out four and scattering seven hits. She was also 1 of 2 with two runs scored.

Janel LaRont went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs against the Beavers and had a solo home run against St. Cloud State.

DSU plays former Dakota Athletic Conference foes Valley City State and Minot State today in St. Cloud.

team splits with Briar Cliff

STURGIS, S.D. — The Dickinson State baseball team earned a split against Briar Cliff University on Saturday.

Briar Cliff beat the Blue Hawks 12-4 in the first game but DSU bounced back behind pitcher Eric Seiler and a two-run double from Jacob Muir to pick up a 5-4 win in the second game.

Jonathon Mendoza was 2-for-3 with a RBI double and scored two runs for DSU in the win.

Caleb Burgard went 2-for-2 with a double. Ryan Risse and Chris Antoku each had a RBI.

In the first game, Tanner Newman took the loss on the mound.

Mendoza went 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI, Muir was 2-for-4 with a double and Risse was 1-for-3 with a RBI double. Joe Binstock went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a double.

The Blue Hawks play Mount Marty (S.D.) today in Spearfish, S.D.
