Blue Hawks beat VCSU, fall to Minot State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Dickinson State softball team picked up another split Sunday to end its trip to the Kelly Laas Memorial Invitational hosted by St. Cloud State at the Husky Dome.

Alex Vargas hit a two-run homer in the third and a two-run single in the seventh to lead the Blue Hawks to a 7-1 victory over Valley City State.

DSU reliever Regan Lawrence gave up four earned runs in the final two innings of a 6-2 loss to Minot State.

Vargas was 3-for-4 and scored two runs to lead DSU past the Vikings. Claudia Torres and Dani Benito each drove in a run.

Against Minot State, Lawrence had a tough go after taking over in relief of starter Taysia Kaufman in the fifth inning.

Tiffany Friesen belted a two-run homer to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning. Ali Cygan then padded the Beavers’ lead with a two-run triple in the sixth.

Kaufman went 2-for-3 with a RBI double and a run scored for the Blue Hawks (2-2). Benito also drove in a run.
