Trinity defeats Shiloh Christian, will play for consolation title

MINOT — After a disheartening loss to open the Class B state tournament, the Dickinson Trinity boys basketball team found a way to move on.
Jacob Volk had another strong performance with a game-high 21 points and the Titans nearly had four players score in double figures of a 59-51 consolation win over Shiloh Christian on Friday afternoon at the Minot State Dome.
“The kids did a great of getting to the basket, and getting a win at the state tournament,” Trinity coach Gregg Grinsteinner said.
The Titans (23-3) meet the winner of the semifinal game between Rugby and Cavalier for fifth place at 2 p.m. today. Shiloh (17-9) plays the loser for seventh place at noon.
Volk scored 28 points on Thursday, but didn’t receive much help in a 52-49 loss to LaMoure-Litchville-Marion. The 6-foot-3 guard said pride was on the line.
“We’ve all played together for a long time,” said Volk, who also had eight rebounds and five assists. “We need to play hard the rest of the tournament.”
Trinity had an easier time in the paint against Shiloh and it was reflective in the box score. Jesse Kubik scored 13 points, Isiah Binstock had 12 and Jacob Good added nine. The trio combined for 12 points the first day.
“We didn’t have a lot of energy (Thursday), but today we really wanted it,” said Kubik, a 6-7 senior center. “We don’t want to end our tournament with losses.”
Kubik and Binstock’s ability on the boards was also on display, as they combined for 27.
Nine of Binstock’s 16 rebounds came on the offense end, which allowed Trinity multiple chances per possession. The Titans shot 68 times compared to just 47 for Shiloh. The Titans won the rebounding battle 46-33.
The Titans led from start to finish, but the spread was single digits for most of the game. They were up 30-24 at halftime.
Volk had eight points in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Shiloh’s Donovan Lambert had a team-high 18 points in the loss.
Binstock said Friday’s effort was all about finding a way to bounce back.
“We knew (Thursday) was disappointing for our team,” Binstock said. “We brought our ‘A’ game today.”
