Blue Hawks softball splits again in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. — Rebecca Lopez’s three-run double to left field in the sixth inning broke a tie and lifted the Dickinson State softball team to a victory over Siena Heights (Mich.) on Saturday at the Tucson Invitational.

Lopez put the Blue Hawks in the lead and they held on for an 8-5 victory. DSU lost its second game of the day to Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) 9-0 in five innings.

DSU tied the game against Sienna Heights when Kristy Ortiz belted a one-out double to right that scored Taysia Kaufman to make it 5-5.

Alex Vargas drove in two runs on a double to left-center to give DSU a three-run lead in the third.

Nicole Labato took over at pitcher for the Blue Hawks in the third inning and scattered three hits over the next 3 1/3 innings to keep the Saints (7-7) off balance and give DSU a chance for a comeback.

The Blue Hawks (4-4) didn’t have the same magic against Olivet Nazarene. They had just five hits and gave up 10.

Hannah Gardner went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the 12th-ranked Tigers (13-1). Justin Phillips had a triple and a RBI double.

Kaufman, Vargas, Lopez, Monique Yslas and Justeena Gutierrez all went 1-for-2 for DSU. Kaufman started in the circle and took the loss.
