West Fargo edges Jamestown

BISMARCK — Jamestown had plenty of staying power, but it was West Fargo’s refusal to give up its lead that won out.

BISMARCK — Jamestown had plenty of staying power, but it was West Fargo’s refusal to give up its lead that won out.

West Fargo posted a 71-66 win over Jamestown during the quarterfinals of the Class A state girls basketball tournament on Thursday at the Bismarck Civic Center Exhibition Hall.

The Blue Jays got to within striking distance of the Packers several times late in the second half, but were never able to break through and take a lead. West Fargo (20-3) led 35-32 at halftime and never trailed in the second half.

“We really played together as a team and kept with it the whole game,” said junior forward Amanda Levin, who led all scorers with 20 points.

Jamestown’s Paige Peterson hit a shot with just under four minutes left in regulation to cut West Fargo’s lead to 57-56. West Fargo senior guard Christine Baltezore answered Peterson’s shot with a 3-pointer with 3 minutes, 17 seconds left in regulation.

The No. 3-ranked Packers advance to play Bismarck in today’s 3 p.m. semifinals.

Levin scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half.

Jamestown’s Kyra Dewald scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Blue Jays (15-5). Dewald also eclipsed the 1,000 points scoring milestone during the game and now sits at 1,007 points.

Bismarck Century 52, G.F. Red River 38

The hole Grand Forks Red River dug themselves into on Thursday was just too big to dig out of.

The Roughriders fell to Bismarck Century 52-38 in the quarterfinals of the Class A state girls basketball tournament.

Thursday didn’t start well for Red River. The Roughriders shot 15.8 percent from the field (3-for-19) in the first half and trailed the No. 2-ranked Patriots 26-9 at halftime.

All-Eastern Dakota Conference guard Ellie Ripplinger was held to two points in the opening half. Ripplinger finished with eight points.

The No. 2-ranked Patriots (20-3) are the defending Class A state champions and will play No. 1-ranked Fargo Shanley at 1 p.m. Friday in the semifinals at the Bismarck Civic Center main arena.

Nicole LaDouceur scored 12 points to lead Red River and Jennifer Trader added 11.

Macy Lynch posted a double-double for the Patriots finishing with team highs in points (11) and rebounds (10).

Bismarck 78, Wahpeton 46

The Bismarck girls basketball team was given a bunch of second chances on offense, and the Demons cashed in on a lot of them.

Bismarck got several cracks at the hoop on many possessions of the second half in a 78-46 win over Wahpeton during the quarterfinals of the Class A state girls basketball tournament.

The Demons (16-7) held an 18-3 advantage over the Huskies in second-chance points. That statistic was what hurt Wahpeton (10-13) the most in a game which it was tied with Bismarck 22-22 at halftime.

Bismarck started the second half on a 17-4 run and outscored the Huskies 56-24 in the final 18 minutes.

Junior forward Keisha Engelhardt paced Bismarck with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Wahpeton is making its first state tournament appearance since 1986.

Fargo Shanley 64, Mandan 30

Fargo Shanley wasted little time showing why it is the top-seeded girls basketball team from the East Region. First-round nerves? Not a chance.

The No. 1-ranked Deacons seized control early in their quarterfinal with Mandan and cruised to a 64-30 win over the Braves during the Class A state girls basketball tournament.

Shanley (21-2) rattled off a 12-0 run during the first half to pull away from Mandan and never looked back.

Senior Jessica Anderson paced Shanley with 22 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

McKayla Howling Wolf scored 13 points to lead the Braves (12-11).
