Dickinson State softball heating up in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Dickinson State softball team is winding down its spring break trip to Arizona in fine fashion.

The Blue Hawks won two games on both Thursday and Friday at the Tucson Invitational. They defeated Missouri Valley 2-1 in eight innings and beat Dordt (Iowa) 6-2 on Thursday before clamping down on Avila (Mo.) 4-0 and Mount Marty (S.D.) 10-0 on Friday.

Tayisa Kaufman wrapped up an eight-run first inning with a three-run triple as the Blue Hawks trounced Mount Marty. Regan Lawrence, who picked up the win in the pitching circle, and Nicole Labato each drove in two runs in the first.

Janel LaRont added RBIs in the third and fifth inning.

Against Avila earlier in the day, LaRont pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits while striking out four in the shutout over Avila. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run.

Claudia Torres had a RBI double in the second inning and Nicole Labato made it 2-0 on a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Monique Yslas and Taysia Kaufman drove in runs on back-to-back at-bats in the seventh inning to pad the Blue Hawks’ lead.

In the win over Missouri Valley on Thursday, LaRont and Labato each drove in runs.

Against Dordt on Thursday, LaRont had a double, a triple and an RBI to lead the Blue Hawks past Dordt. Yslas went 2-for-4 with a RBI and Rachel Lopez was 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. Alex Vargas and Justeena Gutierrez also drove in runs.

DSU wraps up its trip with games against British Columbia and Cal State-San Marcos today.
