TUCSON, Ariz. — After compiling four straight wins, the Dickinson State softball team ended its trip down to the Tucson Invitational with back-to-back one-run losses.
The Blue Hawks dropped the opener to the University of British Columbia 4-3 and the night cap to Cal State San Marcos (Calif.) 2-1 on Saturday.
Taysia Kaufman pitched in both games starting the second and coming in relief during the first. She threw a total of 9-2/3 innings, allowing two runs, and striking out four.
Janel LaRont started against UBC and gave up two runs on four hits, while striking out one. LaRont went 2-for-4 with a RBI and scored a run.
Carlyn Shimizu and Yasmin Bains led the Thunderbirds. Shimizu went 2-for-4 with a RBI triple, while Bains supplied a 2-for-3 effort with a double, scoring a run and driving in one run.
In the second game, CSSM scored one run in the top of the second inning on a fielder’s choice. DSU responded in the bottom of the fourth as Rebecca Lopez drove in LaRont on a RBI groundout.
However, the Cougars tallied the game’s final run in the top of the fifth as Olivia Lucatuorto drove in Alex Miller on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.
The Blue Hawks continue their season on the road traveling to the Morningside Tournament beginning on March 28.
