I hope we didn't chase Amy away. I am interested in hearing her clarification about the "good ol boy" comment. I understand what you are saying d d. and I think I can relate.

Amy sounds like she has a horse in the race. Amy, you may tell the editor to check his facts and tell these posters they are wrong, but it is you that sounds like the biased one. Not them.

Sometimes you feel like a nut. And sometimes you don't. Interesting posts for sure. :) d d. You were correct in saying that we were talking in general terms. I must say it is rather refreshing to be on the same page as someone. Amy I don't understand your anger. Are you angry because in your own words that the city attorney didn't monitor the books? Or angry that the city attorney didn't inform the states attorney? but the BCI did? Amy said this:I could care less about your "good ole boy club" I am well aware of its existence. This is not the case entirely." Care to elaborate? Amy said:" Why don't you focus your comments on our Stark County States Attorney, who lets murderers and meth cookers do what they do best!" Taking the attention from one problem to another really isn't going to solve anything now is it? I would think that we should look at everything. Top to bottom and see if there are problems. I must say quite frankly that it appears there are issues all over. Even in Medora they have telephone service. Even in Medora they have internet. Just one click away. I bet that's it. So and So sent an e-mail and it got lost. It happens a lot. They have ways of checking those hard drives though I am told. I hope Amy shares more about the "injustices" she speaks about. A lot can be heard in local coffee shops, the grain elevators, sitting behind someone at an auction. I am sure it will all come out eventually. The chatter never stops.

dd. Your comment at 7:59 PM stated that the states attorney "looked the other way" among other comments you know nothing about. Those are complete untruths, and you should be ashamed. Your comments were not a "general nature". I could care less about your "good ole boy club" I am well aware of its existence. This is not the case entirely. Why don't you focus your comments on our Stark County States Attorney, who lets murderers and meth cookers do what they do best!

Are you people nuts! Do any of you know the details behind this case? I don't think so. There was a complete lack of communication between the city attorney, the BCI, and the states attorney. Do any of you realize you are bashing someone ( Mr. Brovold) without hearing his side of this? How fair is that? Mr. Editor, check your facts, the states attorney was not informed about this crime until the statute of limitations had run out on all but 2 of the charges. At that time he contacted Ms. Ross, she agreed to pay back ALL of the money. At least the city of Medora got that back. So instead of costing the taxpayers of Billings County a great deal of money to prosecute only 2 charges totaling approx. $1800.00, he recouped the entire amount. I'm not saying she should go unpunished, but tell me this, who was auditing the city of Medora's books? No one to be exact. Did the City Attorney monitor anything? NO! Obviously there is no system of checks and balances in Medora, so yes it is easy to get away with a crime of this nature, since no one watches what is going on. Oh and by the way Editor, these are public records, check your facts next time, there is alot more to be told about this story, check to see exactly WHO recieved copies of the investigation by the BCI, and you might want to issue an apology to Mr. Brovold. My hat is off to him for his thankless job, I wouldn't want it. By the way Mr. Editor maybe you should run for the office of Billings County States Attorney. This is an example of another editorial that had no research or fact basis. What a waste of a tree!

d d. I'm not saying it doesn't happen here in North Dakota. It does. A lot. But I've seen other states with it happening way more often and at a much bigger scale. Does it make it any better? Of course not. In smaller communities like this it is hard for people to realize that those who don't speak up are just as guilty and can be held accountable. Some are torn between doing the right thing and losing their job. There is that "good ol' boy" system in place and the employee could very well be out of a job and shunned in the community. I've noticed that some people are reluctant in reporting such crimes (not only in the city offices but elsewhere) because they are told it would very time consuming and costly. Where they get this information is beyond me. Turning a blind eye to such crimes is wrong. It costs the community way more than money. imo It might start off small and then it gets bigger and bigger. Who is to say that these people won't gather certain personal information from the consumer/other employees and branch out into identity theft. I hope there is some major housecleaning done. I also hope that the city/cities inform the Press of some of these changes. They should be sharing this information without having to be asked. Keeping the public informed should be high on the list. imo

Well I don't know about North Dakota being one of the "most corrupt" states. But I do have to wonder about all the other cases we might not have heard about or goodness have NOT been acted on as they should have been. Was there more? Is there more? There does seem to an awfully laid back system in both places. I just hope we don't hear the old we are short staffed and over worked excuse. That just wouldn't be right. Because in my opinion there are a lot more people that work harder and are VERY underpaid. Dennis J - I agree with your post. I said once before that if people are talking about it in the break rooms, over the counters and the streets it must be news. People are talking. People are naming names but I guess the investigators will share once they find out more. After all there is that "open door" policy. Right?

Well said, d.d.. I have to say, that, given this person's position of trust in the community, the case should have been more aggressively pursued than an ordinary theft. If it had been a regular old theft from a car or a house by an ordinary thief-like person, it would certainly NOT have been dropped, even if the thief moved to another state and made restitution. That's upside down. I remember hearing that ND is ranked as one of the most "corrupt" states in the nation, per capita, and most of that corruption is on the local level. Maybe this is why? I've seen it happen in my county. "Nobody wants to make waves". Sigh...

Very good press editorial, and we do see this more and more. The power that we adults have can help with our children's future by expressing our feelings and thoughts. To see a local paper write an editorial the way it is and pointing out another story that happened in our town shows that they are paying attention, thank you.

Hey Jerry I bet some people are worried about stepping on toes. Do you think? Not me. I always tell people I am a terrible dancer and I often step on toes. Even those I'm not dancing with. Doesn't stop me from dancing though. But I have to tell you they watch where they put their toes. hmmm go figure. :)
