Barbara Jean (Olson) Gutenkunst

Barbara Jean (Olson) Gutenkunst, age 60, of Pueblo, Colo., passed away on Aug. 16, 2012, at Parkview Hospital.

Barb was born on June 14, 1952, in St. Ansgar, Iowa, to Allan and Eleanor (Oldenburg) Olson. As a young child her family moved to New England, where she spent her childhood years. She graduated from New England High School in 1970, from North Dakota State University in 1974, obtained her master’s degree in Food and Nutrition from Marywood College in Pennsylvania, and her Ph.D. in Renal Nutrition from Columbia Pacific University in California.

Barb and Randy Gutenkunst were married on May 24, 1975. They lived in Pennsylvania for 13 years before moving to Pueblo, Colo. in 1987.

Barb has always worked in the profession of dietetics. She has spent the past 25 years as a renal dietitian working with dialysis patients for Fresenius Medical Care.

Throughout her time with us, Barb strove to live the Christian life and be generous to all. She unselfishly gave her time to family, friends, patients and co-workers. She loved animals and championed wildlife causes.

Barb was always an early riser, very outgoing to all she met and lived every day to the fullest. Unfortunately, recent painful physical problems made her everyday life difficult. She passed away while trying to restore her earlier quality of life.

Survivors include her husband, Randal of Pueblo; their son, Ryan (Shannon) and grandson, Carson of Tucson Ariz.; sister, Carma (Brian) Gerbig of Dickinson; brother, Douglas (Janice) Olson of Beulah; brothers-in-law, Rodney (Ruth Ann) Gutenkunst of Hunlock Creek, Pa., Arlen Gutenkunst of Bismarck, Lacy Gutenkunst of Lefor, and Kim (Linda) Gutenkunst of Ballwin, Mo.; and a number of nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and mother and father-in-law.

A memorial service for giving thanks and celebrating Barb’s life will take place at 6:30 p.m. today, in the Montgomery & Steward Funeral Chapel, in Pueblo, Colo.
