A funeral service for Clara Brekke, 91, Hebron, is 2 p.m. CST Thursday, Nov. 8, at St. John Church in Hebron, with Rev. Gaylund Olson officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery.

Visitation for Clara will be one hour prior to the service at St. John Church in Hebron.

After a lengthy illness, Clara passed away Monday, Nov. 5, at Marian Manor Healthcare Center in Glen Ullin.

Clara was born June 1, 1921, the daughter of Tony and Mary (Treiber) Neidhardt, who were early settlers in the area. Tony and Mary raised their children on the family farm west of Hebron until Tony’s tragic death and the deaths of four children in 1930.

Clara, her surviving sister Ann, and mother Mary faced a dramatic and difficult time in what was known as the “Dirty ’30s.” Mary was a true pioneer who had amazing faith to help her daughters cope.

Clara graduated from Hebron High School and attended Capital Commercial College in Bismarck. She was employed at Urban’s Inc. and MDU in Hebron.

Clara was a lifelong member of St. John Church, enjoyed singing in the church choir, and piano playing with her sister, Ann, and friends.

Clara was united in marriage to Ernest Brekke on Nov. 21, 1944, at St. John Church in Hebron. Clara and Ernie moved to the Neidhardt farmstead where they raised their children.

Clara enjoyed gardening and watching her beautiful flower gardens. Clara had a love for small animals, especially her Persian cats. Nieces and nephews spent summers on the farm enjoying Clara’s cooking and love of children.

Always wishing to help out, Clara would drive grain trucks, tractors and do lawn mowing. She was a very devoted and loving mother for her children and grandchildren and she cared for her husband following his stroke.

Clara continued to live on the homestead after Ernie’s death. Due to ill health in 2004, she moved to Marian Manor Healthcare Center in Glen Ullin.

Clara is survived by her son, Jerry of Mandan; Bonnie of Hebron; Larry (JoLynn) of Mandan; two grandchildren, Connor and Hollyn Brekke; nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernie; her mother and father; brothers, George and Fred; sisters, Margaret, Frieda and Ann; and one granddaughter, Madison Brekke.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to St. John Church.
