John Stein

John Stein, 85, Bismarck, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 at Sanford Health. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday Jan. 3, at St Anne’s Church, Bismarck with Father Ed Wehner officiating. Interment will follow at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 2, from 5 to 8 at Bismarck Funeral Home, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. by Knights of Columbus.

John was born Oct. 16, 1927 on a farm north of Taylor to Rapheal and Josephine Stein. John attended Ziner Country School and the Abbey in Richardton. John entered the military service in 1946-48, serving in Korea. John farmed north of Taylor from 1948-52.

On Oct. 2, 1950 he married Ann Schabary at St. Thomas Church, Gladstone. John graduated from Dakota Business College, Fargo in 1954. After working for the Coca-Cola Co. in Dickinson for three years he joined West Plains Electric of Dickinson in 1957. John retired from West Plains Electric in 1989 after 31 years of service.

John was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Eagles, Elks, The St. Anthony Club and St. Patrick’s Church of Dickinson.

John and Ann enjoyed many years of camping, fishing, traveling, playing cards, especially pinochle and dominoes. They moved to Bismarck in 1999 and wintered in Casa Grande, Ariz. for 22 years. In September 2011 they moved to Edgewood Village in Bismarck.

John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann and five children; Judy (Dave) Holstad, Casa Grande, Ariz.; Jerry (Karen), Casa Grande, Ariz.; Jane (Walter) Botts, Billings, Mont.; Jacky (Jeff) Herauf, Bismarck; and Jim (Audrey) Springfield, Va.; 10 grandchildren: Ryan, Trisha, Kyle, Callista, Ben, Eric, Samantha, Tyler, Alexandria and Abigail; six great-grandchildren: Korryn, Layla, Avaya, Aiden, Josephine and Adeline; two brothers, Ray (Mae) Stein, Richardton; and Leo (Tillie) Stein, Gladstone.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Adeline and Bertha; and a grandson, Andrew Botts.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery of Mandan or St. Anne’s Church.
