Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Church

Jacqueline “Jackie” Church, 82, died on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center, Dickinson.

A memorial service will be held for Jackie at 3 p.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 in the Chapel at the Golden Valley Manor, Beach, with Lay Minister Mary Massad presiding.

Jacqueline Joyce Vaughan was born in Wichita, Kan., on March 7, 1930 to Erton Randolph and Nelle Erlene (Newton) Vaughan. She was raised and attended school in Wichita. She was a member of her high school swim team and choir.

Jackie met Elwyn Leroy Church, “Doc,” on a blind date while they were attending Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. They were married on Sept. 5, 1949 in Wichita and had just recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Jackie and Doc began their lives together in Battle Creek, Neb. where Jackie worked at home as a seamstress while completing a three-year art course.

They had three children: Craig, Barbara and Carol. Jackie was a member of the Battle Creek United Methodist Church choir and was a Sunday school teacher. She later owned and operated her own dress shop, “Jackie’s.”

In 1967 Jackie moved with her family to Dickinson. Jackie worked at JC Penny’s, the Dickinson Public School Media Center as a graphic artist, as a secretary at The Associates, and finally as secretary for the North Dakota Highway Patrol District Office. Jackie taught art, drawing and calligraphy for the Adult Education Program and was a founding member of the Badlands Art Association where she was later honored for her contribution to the fine arts.

Upon retirement, Jackie and Doc moved to the Black Hills, southwest of Custer, S.D. where they had spent their honeymoon. In 2012 they left their “mountain” and moved back north in order to be closer to their children. Jackie’s final home on Earth was the Golden Valley Manor in Beach.

Jackie was famous with her family and friends for her quick wit, her sense of humor and mischievous personality. She was known to her grandchildren as “BoomBoom” which was her treasured nickname.

Jackie is survived by her husband Doc, Wibaux County Nursing Home, Wibaux, Mont.; son Craig R. Church, Fargo; daughter Barbara J. (David) Lupo, Dickinson; daughter Carol K. Bartz (Doug Perry), Beach. Grandchildren Robert W. (Amber) Bartz, Richardton; Katheryn M. (Brian) Stephens, Libby, Mont.; Christopher D. Lupo (Franny Sewell), and Michael A. Lupo both of Rapid City, S.D. Great-grandchildren Eden Rain, Robert Gerald, Ava Rae and Harper Lilly Bartz, and Sadie Elizabeth Stephens.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Charles N. and sister-in-law Ann Vaughan, and great-grandson Elijah Joseph Bartz.

Arrangements are with Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.
