John Stull

John Carlyle Stull, 96, of Beach, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the Glendive Medical Center in Glendive, Mont.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today, Jan. 8, at the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Beach.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Beach Evangelical Church with Pastor Ben Baker officiating. Interment will be in the Beach City Cemetery.

John was born on Aug. 15, 1916, a son of George and Minnie (Miltonberger) Stull in Elkhart County, Indiana. At the age of 1, John moved with his family south of Golva. He was raised and educated in Golva attending Golva High School. John joined the Civilian Conservation Corp in the mid 1930’s and later moved to Minnesota where he worked for several different farmers. On one particular farm where he worked, he met Thelma Lydeen who, also was working there. They were later married on March 29, 1941, in Morrison County, Minn., in the minister’s home. Following their marriage John and Thelma moved to the Doyle Place south of Sentinel Butte, where they farmed for many years. In 1961, they moved to the Peterson Place north of Beach where they continued to farm until their retirement in 1978. After their retirement, John and Thelma moved to Beach and in 2009 they moved to the Golden Valley Manor in Beach where they resided until John’s passing.

John accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord in 1956 and remained strong in his Christian faith throughout his life. He became a member of the United Methodist Church and was also a board member of the church. John was a loving husband and a wonderful father and grandfather. He enjoyed reading books, especially Louis L’amour westerns. He was self-taught in many areas of his life. John had a great sense of humor. He occasionally would make up words during a game of Scrabble and was known for his original one liners like, “They don’t have enough sense to pound sand in a rat hole.”

John was a board member for the Farmers Home Administration, the North Forks School, Beach Farmers Union Oil Company, Sentinel Butte Farmers Elevator and the Golden Valley Manor. He served as treasurer of the Beach Co-op Credit Union for 25 years.

John was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Cecil, Edward, John, Willis and Theodore; two sisters, Agnes McManigal and Sarah Stull and one grandson, Nathaniel Stull.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Stull of Beach, five children, David (Dee) Stull of Stockton, Calif., Daniel (Kathy) Stull of Las Vegas, Sandra (Ernie) Salazar of Chula Vista, Calif. Linda (Pete) Torgerson of Edinburg, Marla Stull and her friend Rick Flink of Bismarck; one brother, George Jr. (Jean) Stull of Yankton, S.D.; two sisters-in-law, Vonda Stull (Willis’ wife) of Wibaux, Mont., Donna Sygulla (Ted’s wife) of Beach; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; 15 step great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Memorials are suggested to the Beach Evangelical Church building fund in John’s name.
