Jim Pomarleau

Lowell James “Jim” Pomarleau, 68, Mandan, formerly of Belfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, at his home from cancer.

A Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. CST Monday, Feb. 4, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with Monsignor Chad Gion as celebrant and Rev. Bill Ruelle as concelebrant. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan, with full military honors.

Cremation has taken place and visitation is 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. CST Sunday, Feb. 3, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish vigil and rosary service at 4 p.m. CST. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Monday.

Lowell James “Jim” was born Oct. 15, 1944, in Scobey, Mont., to Ray and Veronica (Kurtz) Pomarleau. He attended Carbert Route School, a one-room school house.

As a child he was active in 4-H and was a proud showman of the steers he raised. Attending two years of high school at St. Mary’s in New England, he graduated in 1962 from Hardin, Mont. Jim attended the University of Montana, studying forestry.

In May 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard USS Neches during the Vietnam War as an E5 metal worker/welder. For his service, Jim received the National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.

Following his discharge, he worked as a depot agent for the railroad in Belfield.

On June 15, 1971, he married Geri Knopik at St. Bernard’s Church in Belfield. They made their home in Belfield, where they raised their four children.

Dedicated and hardworking, Jim was the owner and operator of Jim Pomarleau Construction in Belfield for many years and many of his customers became his friends.

An avid outdoorsman with a great appreciation for nature, Jim loved hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling. He especially enjoyed horticulture, planting and caring for trees and watching the birds.

He was a history buff, reading and collecting many books. Jim liked to travel all of his life and enjoyed many road trips with his family where he taught his children to swim.

Jim was an active member of the Belfield Community. He was the sexton for St. Bernard’s Cemetery, a Cub and Boy Scout leader, t-ball coach and volunteer fireman.

A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, he will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Blessed to have shared his life is his wife of 41 years, Geri Pomarleau, Mandan; four children, Mark (Stacie), Bottineau, Mike (Tanya), Bismarck, Michelle, Mandan, and Matthew (Lacy), Hermosa, S.D.; ten grandchildren, Evan, Cole, Isaac, Alex, Eli, Jayden, Briahna, Lily, Jaxson, and Leah; three sisters, Kay (Ken) Harmsen, Quartzsite, Ariz., Mary (Wally) Bonneau, Worden, Mont., and Sue (Gary) Ballard, Hysham, Mont.; mother-in-law, Magdalene Knopik, Dickinson; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless friends and former customers.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, John Knopik.

Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
