Edward L. Lothspeich

Edward L. Lothspeich, 88, Dickinson, died Thursday, Feb. 7, at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center, Dickinson.

Ed’s Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Rev. Shannon Lucht as the celebrant. Military honors will follow the Mass and be provided by the Dickinson Honors Team. Interment will follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation is Monday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a rosary and vigil service at 7 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church Tuesday.

Edward Leo Lothspeich was born Jan. 21, 1925, in Wales, the son of Edward and Rose (Dirkes) Lothspeich. He grew up in the Wales area and graduated from high school in 1943.

Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, stationed in San Diego and the Hawaiian islands. Ed then attended Dakota Business College in Fargo.

Ed worked as a bookkeeper at a Chevrolet dealership in Cando after marrying the love of his life, Irene Michels in Calio on June 3, 1954. He then moved his family to Grand Forks in 1958, where he worked at Rydell Chevrolet for 25 years before moving to Dickinson, where he owned and operated a motel, worked for the school district, and lastly at J.C. Penney before retiring.

Ed’s various hobbies included horseshoes, pinochle, watching the Vikings lose four Super Bowls with his son Pat, listening and watching the Minnesota Twins games.

He loved attending his son’s extracurricular activities in sports and enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ed is survived by his daughter, Becky (Randy) Byzewski, Dickinson; sons, Mark (Jen), Grand Forks, Patrick (Denette), Bismarck, and Steven (Janelle), Black Hawk, S.D.; grandchildren, Robyn (Chris) Manners, Renee (Calvin) Rehbein, Joshua, Jason, Eric, Lindsy, Seth, Jared, Zachary, Derek and Ashtyn Lothspeich; great-grandchildren, James and Carly Rehbein, Randy, Ericka and Khloe Manners; sister, Ann (Larry) Hagen, Bismarck; brothers, Lyle (Iris) Lothspeich, Langdon, and Marlin Lothspeich, Park River; and sisters-in-law, Mary, Fargo, and Rosemary, Dickinson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene on Jan. 21, 2012; his parents; siblings and their spouses, Eugene (Marion, Harold, Gerald (Marie), Leon, Don (Deloris) and Franklin.

Arrangements are with Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.
