Caroline M. Lefor

A funeral Mass for Caroline M. Lefor, 94, Lefor, is 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Lefor, with Rev. Jason Lefor, Rev. Biju Chitteth and Rev. William McDermott con-celebrating.

A funeral Mass for Caroline M. Lefor, 94, Lefor, is 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Lefor, with Rev. Jason Lefor, Rev. Biju Chitteth and Rev. William McDermott con-celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Elizabeth’s Cemetery in Lefor.

Visitation for Caroline is 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson. Visitation will continue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Lefor, with a rosary and vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Caroline passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, at St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson.

Caroline Messmer was born Dec. 4, 1918, in Glendive, Mont., the daughter of Ralph and Elizabeth (Schneider) Messmer. At an early age, she moved with the family to Lefor where they farmed east of Lefor.

She grew up and attended school through the eighth grade. Caroline worked on the farm and in Mandan for several years.

She returned to Lefor and on June 20, 1939, Caroline was united in marriage to Victor F. Lefor at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Lefor. The couple made their home on the farm, raising their family of nine children.

Caroline was a dedicated homemaker. She later retired to downtown Lefor (two blocks away). Caroline enjoyed gardening, cooking, quilting (making one for each of her children), crocheting, knitting, baking (especially her Sunday rolls and German dishes), playing horse rummy and above all, her greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother to her family.

Caroline was an active member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and Lefor Homemakers Club.

Caroline is survived by her children, Robert T. (Rose) Lefor of Lefor, Jerome (Kathy) Lefor of Beaverton, Ore., Betty Lou (Harry) Slaney of Roseville, Calif., Terrance (Ann) Lefor of Roseau, Minn., Victor J. Lefor of Belfield, Leslie (Cindy) Lefor of Fresno, Calif., Donna Mae (Bill Allen) Nelson of Prior Lake, Minn., Gregory (Jackie Gion) Lefor and Thomas (Lori) Lefor of Greeley, Colo.; 21 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; sister, Marie Banyai of Missoula, Mont., and many nieces and newphews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Elizabeth; husband, Victor F.; and brothers, Robert H. and James Messmer.

Condolenses to the family.. Caroline was a very special lady..I was a young boy approximately four years old playing in the backyard of their farmhouse east of Lefor with brother Wayne and cousins Bobby and Jerry..Somehow I found a hole in the fence, crawled out and headed straight for the flowing creek. Unable to swim or walk on water, i started flowing down the creek. Cousin Jerry ran to tell his mom. Caroline waded into the creek retrieved my lifeless body and took me in the house where she revived me using hot water and .. Condolences to the family..Caroline was a special lady in my life..As a young boy approximately four years old, I was playing with brother Wayne and cousins Bobby and Jerry in the backyard of their farmhouse east of Lefor. Somehow I found a hole in the fence and ran straight into the creek.. Unable to swim or walk on water, I began flowing downstream. Jerry ran and told his mom. Caroline waded out into the water, retrieved my lifeless body and took me in the house. Using hot water and other techniques, she revived me, SHE SAVED MY LIFE..
