Anne Degenstein

A funeral service for Anne Degenstein, 85, Watford City, is 2 p.m. CST Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the CrossPoint Wesleyan Church in Watford City. Interment by cremation will follow the service under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Watford City.

Anne D. Degenstein was born May 4, 1927, at Brisbane, the daughter of Dennis and Mary Agatha (Gross) Bonogosky. Her young life was spent attending rural schools and working on the farm like a hired hand.

In 1948, Anne married John Degenstein in Raleigh. They later divorced. With four boys and two girls, Anne learned to survive in hard times, supporting her family by renting rooms, cooking and taking care of laundry.

She waitressed at the “City Café” and for a time worked as a nurse in Hettinger. The family moved to Dickinson for several years and then to Great Falls, Mont., in 1970. Anne never owned a car nor did she ever have a driver’s license.

Anne enjoyed gardening, happily sharing her vegetables and canned goods with her neighbors. Collecting lawn ornaments became a passion, and many drove by her yard to take pleasure in her creativity. Everywhere she went she would collect rocks to place in her front yard. She loved mountains and fishing in streams for trout.

A very resourceful and self-determined woman herself, Anne esteemed the Salvation Army giving them her support. She had a deep respect for the United States military, giving whenever she could to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Anne was quick-witted, a memory of her that will be cherished by family and friends.

She passed away with family by her side Friday morning, Feb. 22, at the Good Shepherd Home in Watford City.

Survivors are: her children, John (Carol), Mary Ann Anton, “Digger” Dennis, Roy (Cindy), Lester, Kathy Ford; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Mary Deichert, brother, Blasé Bonogofsky, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Anne was preceded in death by: her brothers, Ralph, Joseph, Donald, John, Ignatz, and Dennis Jr.; and her sisters, Josephine Bloxom, Phyllis Volk, Barbara Borchert and Katherine Bonogofsky.
